Nice article, the section about various sources is applicable to any electronic part needed for a repeatable project . . . I've spent hours on Digikey and Mouser just trying to find a specific connector, very time consuming and often frustrating.

Happy to find your site/blog; I'm an engineering artist as well (into dj'ing, electronic music, drum machines, visual art, and electronic art). I found you by searching Arduino on Etsy.

Cheers from Canada,
ao.
I did some basic research after your comment, and I will agree that the biggest slider I could locate was 100mm. However, you could in theory try using spectrasymbol's softpots, as seen here:

http://www.spectrasymbol.com/typo3/site/en/soft...

and purchasable, among other places, here:

200mm long softpot
http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet...
http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.p...

500mm long softpot
http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet...
http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.p...
